Welcome to The Memory Lab.

It’s been here all along, but over the last few years, it’s gotten a bit dusty and a little out of sorts. So too has the world around us—maybe not so much the dusty part, but the "out of sorts" part for sure. I’ve decided that now is as good a time as any to do some rearranging, clear the cobwebs, and get back to it.

While my time away from the lab has been spent freelancing for marketing projects, events, and editorials, I have been almost desperate for a space—an outlet where I can play, experiment, explore, and reflect.

When The Memory Lab was first conceived, it was a conceptual seed planted by a grad school professor. She was commenting on the nature of the work I was making at the time: video art that recycled pop culture media from my formative years in the 80s and 90s. She said something to the effect of, "It’s like you’re working in a memory lab." I don’t remember much else about that conversation; in fact, I’m not even sure which professor it was. But the name struck a chord.

So here I am, ten years later, re-entering the lab.

Why now? One might ask. The economy is in the dumps, the job market is less than stellar, and the general "vibes" of the moment are pretty dire. To that, I say: That is exactly why.

If I’ve learned anything in my trips around the sun, it’s that there is only ever now. These moments are finite and never guaranteed. After many "nows" spent overthinking and evaluating, I’ve decided it has to be today.

A New Direction

This time around, The Memory Lab will look a bit different. I am no longer focused purely on the past. In fact, much of the work I’ve been making lately is focused exclusively on the present, which has led me deeper into the creative process itself.

The mediums have shifted, too. While I haven’t abandoned video, I am leaning into the joy I find in drawing and animation. I’ve even begun planting seeds for animated pieces where sound plays a lead role—more on that to come.

While I’ve charted a starting point for this journey, I am not tied to any specific path. I’ll be using this blog—my Lab Notes—as a place to document, reflect, and explore. I’ll take note of what’s working, what isn't, and which detours feel worth taking.

I’m not entirely sure what will happen along the way, but in a world full of uncertainties, I figure I might as well lean in.
